One of the two fathers, James Moed, expressed his frustration about the incident on his Twitter. He claims that the Uber driver called the police on him and his husband. This was after the driver saw their crying baby in the backseat and said that he should be taken care of by its mother.
While the family was in their Marriott Marquis Marina hotel room, the police came knocking on their door at 01:30 am. The couple had to show legal identification in order to prove that they are the child’s legal parents. In a slew of Tweets, Moed wrote: ‘’It turns out the Uber driver who had taken us to the hotel had called the cops – accusing us of… child trafficking? child endangerment?”
Moed also wrote that he stayed up the rest of the night, asking himself “What if we hadn’t had his passport? [What if] the cops had been less agreeable?’’ He added that he notified Uber about the incident, but only received an automatic refund and formal letter so far.
‘’Keep your $10. We want proof that you keep #LGBTQ riders safe from homophobic drivers.’’ Moed wrote. He also expressed that he is not interested in the driver being fired. However, he does want the driver to apologize and the insurance that he will attend LGBTQ sensitivity training. Uber says that they are investigating the incident.
