López Obrador met transgender parliamentarian Salma Luévano over the weekend at an event where he greeted her with a kiss on the cheek. When later asked by a journalist why he kissed her on the cheek, López Obrador responded that he "also kisses men" and referred to Luévano as "a man dressed as a woman."

The president faced significant criticism for his comments, with LGBTQ+ organisations rallying behind Luévano and demanding an apology. The apology came promptly. "I want to apologise to a colleague who identifies as a woman," said the president during a daily press conference.

Luévano accepted the apology from her fellow party member. "This statement is very important because it highlights a struggle that has taken us decades. I am a woman, and that is not up for debate," she wrote on Twitter/X.
