In the middle of the football field of his Australian club Adelaide United, Cavallo got down on one knee to ask his partner, Leighton Morrell, to marry him. He received assistance from his club.

On Instagram, Cavallo thanked his club: "Your endless support has meant so much to me. You have provided a safe space in football, one that I never in my dreams thought could ever be possible, and encouraged me to live every day of my life authentically. It felt right to share this special moment on the pitch, where it all started."

He also shared three photos of the proposal, with the third one showing the ring on his partner's finger.

Cavallo was the first professional footballer to come out during his career. He regularly advocates for LGBT+ rights but still faces homophobic chants during matches.
