Gabriel Attal becomes the new Prime Minister of France. This makes him the youngest, but also the first openly homosexual leader of the French cabinet ever.

The 34-year-old politician is currently the Minister of Education, but due to a cabinet reshuffle by President Emmanuel Macron, the articulate Attal is moving up to the second-highest political office.

Attal's star rose during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he made an impression as the spokesperson for the prime minister. In his current role as Minister of Education, the left-leaning politician gained favour with the right flank by banning the abaya, an Islamic garment, in public schools. The French school system adheres to a strict principle of neutrality, prohibiting the tolerance of religious clothing.

French President Macron sees Attal as someone who can bring new energy to his government team. On Twitter/X, he says to Attal, "I know I can count on your energy and commitment to realise the renewal project that I have announced."

Attal will be the first homosexual prime minister of France. However, his coming out, a few years ago, was not planned. A former classmate revealed this when Attal got a cabinet position in 2018. After this revelation, he has often spoken out against bullying and homophobia, sharing his own experiences.

Attal is currently in a relationship with Member of the European Parliament Stéphane Séjourné, a confidant of Emmanuel Macron.
