Northern Macedonia: the first Gay Parade is coming

During the Eurovision Song Contest, we almost saw Northern Macedonia take the crown. Although that turned out not to be the case, there is another victory to be celebrated in the country! The northern Macedonian capital, Skopje, will host on June 29 what activists describe as "the first gay pride parade in the Balkan country."

The event will be a form of protest for equality, support and protection of the human rights of the LGBT community, said Antonio Mihajlov, of the NNHT (National Network Against Homophobia and Transphobia).

Mihajlov added that everyone will be welcome in the heart of Skopje, where the parade starts, regardless of nationality, religion, gender identity or sexual orientation.

Irena Cvetkovic, one of the organizers, said police officers and NNHT members will follow the march to ensure that all participants will feel safe.

The first Gay Pride week took place in June 2013, but this was seriously disrupted by an attack on an LGBT center in Skopje.
