The 58-year-old author is currently concerned about a Scottish law that prohibits inciting hatred against people based on, among other things, their gender identity. She said she would rather be arrested than address trans people with the correct personal pronouns.
On X (formerly Twitter), Rowling takes it a step further. In response to a user's question about whether she expects apologies from Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe (Harry) and Emma Watson (Hermione), who openly support trans rights in response to Rowling's essays, the author says, "Celebs who cosied up to a movement intent on eroding women's hard-won rights and who used their platforms to cheer on the transitioning of minors can save their apologies for traumatised detransitioners and vulnerable women reliant on single sex spaces."
Further in the conversation, Rowling responds to a message from the Netherlands by saying she is sending "love and solidarity" from the "TERF island," referring to the UK. This abbreviation stands for Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist.
Rowling has long been known as a staunch opponent of trans rights. Currently, she expresses concerns on social media about children transitioning. Her argument that the transgender rights movement is causing young children to be "traumatised" is used by conservatives to paint an inaccurate picture of transgender youth. Only a small fraction of individuals who have transitioned want to reverse it. By portraying children as victims, Rowling employs an old narrative against LGBT+ rights.
