German Footballers Plan Collective Coming Out

In Germany, a collective coming out in professional football is being prepared. According to German media, an unknown number of professional footballers will come out on 17th May.

The initiative is organised by former footballer Marcus Urban and has been regularly discussed in German media since December. Urban was one of the first professional footballers to come out after his career. For the project, Urban has also received donations from various German professional clubs.

The date of 17th May has not been chosen randomly. It is the International Day Against Homophobia. Nothing is yet known about the number of footballers who want to come out. Earlier, Urban hinted that players from other countries would also participate in the initiative. He says he is in talks with several gay footballers in a private group chat and describes it as "an interesting dynamic." According to him, there are even gay couples in the German Bundesliga. German media report that a documentary about the day is also being prepared.

Currently, only a small number of professional footballers are publicly out. Among them is the Australian Josh Cavallo, who recently proposed to his boyfriend. Czech player Jakub Jankto came out last year. Jake Daniels, who plays for the British Blackpool FC, came out as gay in 2022.

The planned mass coming out is remarkable, as homosexuality and professional football still prove to be a difficult combination.
