Four men were arrested for killing LGBT magazine editor Xulhaz Mannan and Mahbub Rabbi Tonoy in 2016. Xulhaz Mannan and Mahbub Rabbi Tonoy, who worked for the first and only LGBT magazine in Bangladesh, were hacked to death by machete-handling Islamic activists in the Xulhaz apartment.

It was reported that a group of unidentified men entered the flat disguised as couriers and immediately participated in the murders. They were seen walking away from the flat. Allegedly they stabbed a police officer who tried to prevent them from escaping.

At the time, Ansar Al Islam - the so-called Bangladesh chapter of Al-Qaeda - took responsibility for the murders that claimed the two men practiced and promoted homosexuality. The Bangladeshi police commissioner, Mohibul Islam Khan, told AFP that four of the eight members of the extremist group have been arrested.
