The nomination of Biedroń is remarkable: the current Polish government actively campaigns against the so-called ‘LGBT+ ideology’. Because of Biedroń’s progressive positions, the three left-wing parties nominated him as their presidential candidate. “Biedroń has clear views on the secular state, on social affairs, on the EU, on matters of freedom, including women's issues," said Wlodzimierz Czarzasty, leader of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) to press agency AFP. Many of Biedroń’s point of views are contradictory to the ones of the current PiS government. The left-wing presidential candidate is, next to being a LGBT+ activist, an atheist, feminist and pro-European.

Biedroń began his political career as Poland’s first openly gay MP, after years of activism. Years later, in 2014, he even became the country’s first openly gay mayor, when he was elected to office in a northern town by the Baltic Sea. Currently, Biedroń is a member of the European Parliament.

In the upcoming presidential elections in May, Biedroń will have to compete with the current right-wing Andrzej Duda and the liberal Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska. The campaign will be tough for Biedroń, since the right-wing as well as the liberal bloc are considerably bigger in the parliament. However, there is a little bit of hope: Biedroń managed to beat the threshold in the 2019 elections, something left wing parties failed to do in the previous elections
