Mexico: First telenovela with gay couple as leads

In the original Spanish soap there was a gay couple: Aristotle and Temo. The two are now the stars of the new spin-off series. The new series follows Aristotle and Temo moving to Mexico City to go to college there. Televisa, the network behind the two shows, said the original was one of the most watched programs. The finale attracted around four million viewers. Fans lovingly referring to the couple with the shipname Aristemo. The show is being praised for their positive representation of queer Latin people.

Mi Marido Tiene Familia won a GLAAD Media Award for Best Scripted Television Series (in the Spanish language) earlier this year. "It shows that there are many people of different ages are interested in getting in touch with stories like this" said Santiago Pineda, one of the writers about both the original show and its spin-off. "We wanted the show to have a friendlier approach, so that everyone could see that Aristotle and Temo in addition to their sexual orientation are both people with dreams, goals, fears and ambitions."
