Ecuador legalizes gay marriage!

Initially, the Supreme Court had to announce a decision on June 4th, but the judges said they needed more time. On Wednesday, June 12th , a decision was finally made: five votes in favour and four against same-sex marriage.

Even though marriage equality has only stepped into the picture now, Ecuador has been a forerunner regarding LGBT+ rights in other areas: in 1998, Ecuador was one of the first countries in the world to introduce a constitutional ban on discrimination based on sexuality.

Previously, marriage was legally regarded as a union between a man and a woman, but same-sex couples did receive the same rights as married couples through civil unions (except for adoption rights).
