Taliban sends video of gay man's execution to relatives

In early August, 22-year-old Hamed Sabouri was kidnapped by the Taliban. Five days later, his family was forwarded a video of his execution. He was murdered because of his sexual orientation.

The boyfriend of the executed man, known by the pseudonym Bahar, was also sent the video. He speaks to Insider and PinkNews about a "brutal murder". "I think the Taliban wanted to send a dangerous message to his family."

He remembers his boyfriend as a "sweet man" who had the dream of becoming a doctor.

Life is no longer safe for Bahar either. To protect himself, Hamed's boyfriend had to delete all the photos he had of him. “Life here is hellish for any LGBT+ Afghan,” he says. Bahar has been arrested twice and imprisoned. There he was sexually abused. Both times he managed to escape by bribing guards.

Bahar's experiences are no different from the situation in which many LGBT+ Afghans find themselves. According to Human Rights Watch, they have been attacked, arrested and are the victims of gang rapes. The LGBT+ organization for which Bahar is active makes a heartfelt cry to the rest of the world: "If the world doesn't help us, we will all disappear like Hamed."
