Gay marriage was introduced to the lawmakers of Tapei on May 17th, after the law got approved nearly a year after the court of the island ruled that a law that legalized same-sex marriage would never come into existence. The government was given a two-year period to extend the same-sex marriage rights. A referendum about the matter was held in November 2018. At the time 67% of the voters were against the same sex marriage law. These numbers did not change the courts' mind however.

526 marriages took place the day the new law was introduced after the fight for marriage equality for three decades by LGBT+ activists. Uniformity in Taiwan is undoubtedly a huge step in the right direction for LGBT + rights, yet it is not without limits. According to the procedure, same-sex couples may only adopt children who are biologically related to at least one of the parents. According to the Ministry, none of the newlyweds have applied for adoption.
