Kwantlen Polytechnic University Canada questioned 262 queer men about their online hookups. In particular, the feeling of messaging with someone who was ‘exactly the kind of guy you’re attracted to’. The study shows that men who use apps like Grindr are more likely to hook up with strangers when faced with a low phone battery. Finding your online price charming releases dopamine in the brains, a physical sensation comparable to that of an addiction.

According to professor David Stuart; “Addiction has many definitions, but one of them includes a compulsive pursuit of a dopamine release in our brains. Each button we touch holds the promise of sexual excitement or satisfaction, sometimes even a cure for loneliness or isolation.”

The participants were given several situations in which they either had 5, 20 or 100% battery life. The participants with a lower battery were more likely to hook up than those with a full battery. The researchers were inspired by an earlier study executed by Uber among their own users.
