Grigoryeva regularly campaigned for human rights in Russia. Dinar Idrisov, co-activist and close friend, wrote on Facebook that his friend was brutally murdered near her house. "She had recently been the victim of violence and death threats," he wrote, adding that she had filed several complaints with the police.

The police have not confirmed the reports of death threats and it is not clear whether the attack was related to Grigoyeva’s activism. A suspect has been detained for her murder.

In addition to her activism for LGBT + rights, Grigoryeva also demonstrated against Russia's annexation of the Ukrainian Crimean peninsula, the mistreatment of prisoners and a number of other human rights issues.
