Indonesian city working on anti-LGBT law

The city council of Depok, an Indonesian city of almost two million citizens, is following the example of other regions in the country by developing an anti-LGBT law. Unfortunately, this development does not come as a huge surprise: numerous areas in the country have found themselves amid a wave of ‘’anti-LGBT hysteria’’.

Even though homosexuality is not illegal in most Indonesian regions, some parts do criminalize it due to Sharia law. According to one of the local politicians, the criminalization of homosexuality is supported by all parties in Depok.

LGBT + rights have been strongly opposed for several years in different parts of Indonesia. Last month, the chairman of Indonesia’s population and family planning agency labelled LGBT residents as the "main enemy of national development." For example, he encouraged regional leaders to help fight the LGBT "disease". In addition, more and more LGBT + clubs, saunas and even HIV charities are being raided by the police.
