Conversion therapy is a treatment focused on changing or suppressing the persons sexuality or gender identity. Many of these treatments are verbal but in some cases other resources are used like testosterone injections and electrical shocks.

Even though conversion therapy is unpopular in Germany several religious groups still perform these kind of treatments. Spahn, who himself is gay, told during a press conference in Berlin that he wants to present the proposal to the parliament before the end of 2019.

Before the proposal can be presented however, a special commission has to determine what specific offences are made and how to deal with them. There also needs to be a well-considered decision on how these crimes will be punished. Jens hopes to be finished before the end of 2019. Lawyers of the commission say that the ban on conversion therapy is achievable.
