When the fire station in South Yorkshire celebrated LGBT history month last year and adjusted their profile picture with a rainbow flag in it, they were flooded with homophobic online comments. This year, the fire department decided to take a different route and made a rainbow-filled video in which they hilariously respond to the hateful comments.
One of the firefighters quote the following ‘critique’ they received online: "I don’t see or understand why you feel the need to celebrate.” This is read out while the firefighter is decorated with confetti and rainbow flags. Another one goes: “Constantly going on and on about who wants to shag who shouldn’t be a fire service priority.”
However, the video also shows why the South Yorkshire fire service believes that LGBT+-acceptance is necessary. Namely: “LGBT+ people still face prejudice at home and at work.” Because, as the video itself says, "Fires don't discriminate, neither do we."
