Cyprus: controversial remarks made by prominent bishop

The Cypriot bishop Neophytos Masouras of Morphpou made headlines after claiming that pregnant women who have anal sex make babies gay. He also described gay men as having ‘’a specific stink.’’

The bishop spoke at a school in Akaki, Cyprus last month. This is when he made several questionable (to say the least) remarks regarding homosexuality: according to him, gay people exist because of pregnant women who have anal sex. If a pregnant woman enjoys anal sex, the desire for this will be passed onto the unborn child, or so the bishop claims.

Now, more footage of the same event has surfaced in which the bishop tells the story of ‘’a handsome young man’’ and a ‘’holy monk.’’ According to the bishop, a young man was told by a monk that he ‘’needs to stop what he is doing’’ (sleeping around with several men), otherwise he will ‘’catch something’’ and ‘’die young.’’ When asked how he could possibly know what the young man was doing, the monk replied by saying that this was due to a ‘’specific stink.’’ This is one of the ways in which holy monks receive information from God, says the bishop.

The bishop concluded his story by telling everyone that the young man was “helped by his family’s prayers and stopped his acts.” He also added: ‘’This young man now smells wonderful.’’
