Rob Jetten sworn in as first openly gay prime minister of the Netherlands

Rob Jetten was sworn in today as prime minister of the Netherlands, making history as the country’s first openly gay head of government and one of the youngest leaders to hold the office.

The D66 leader takes office after a period of political uncertainty and coalition talks, heading a new government in which D66 cooperates with parties including CDA and VVD. His appointment is widely seen as a symbolic milestone for LGBTQ representation in Dutch politics, in a country long known for legal equality but where such visibility at the highest level had been absent.

Jetten has always spoken openly about his sexual orientation without placing it at the center of his political agenda, a stance supporters view as a sign of social normalization. His premiership has also drawn international attention at a time when LGBTQ rights are under pressure in parts of the world.

In his first remarks, Jetten emphasized stability, cooperation and trust in democratic institutions.
