In an email to members of the Colorado Republican Party, chairman Dave Williams complained about Pride Month. He wrote: "The month of June has arrived and, once again, the godless groomers in our society want to attack what is decent, holy, and righteous so they can ultimately harm our children." Despite the fact that the LGBT+ community uses Pride to commemorate the Stonewall riots, fight for justice, and celebrate their own identity, Williams sees it as a conspiracy to "harm children."
According to the Republicans, progress is a "demonic lie." Williams believes Republicans must "Resist the evil that is trying to indoctrinate children, undermine parents, and harm families." The message is that only together can children be protected from the "woke creeps."
On X (formerly Twitter), the Colorado Republicans posted a GIF of an animated flame with the caption ‘’Burn all the pride flags this June’’.
Criticism
Critics view the Republicans’ call as an incitement to violence. Democratic State Representative David Ortiz said that the Republicans "resemble the Taliban more than the Founding Fathers".
Even within their own party, there is discomfort about the call to arson. Valdamar Archuleta, a gay Republican currently running for the U.S. Senate, said the statements "went too far," though he added that he is a "critic" of how Pride has developed in recent years.
A spokesperson for the state's Democratic governor called the statements "ridiculous."
