Less than Half of Amsterdam Youth Accept Homosexuality

Amsterdam once prided itself as the gay capital of the world, but those days are gone. Only 43 percent of Amsterdam youth now say they accept homosexuality, compared to 69 percent two years ago. These figures are part of a broader trend of declining LGBT+ acceptance in the Netherlands.

Research by the Dutch health service GGD reveals that LGBT+ acceptance is drastically falling among youth. The numbers from Amsterdam are stark: only 43 percent of young people say they accept homosexuality, down from 69 percent two years ago. Among boys, only a third find homosexuality acceptable, while roughly half of the girls share this view. The survey was conducted among youth aged 13 to 16 years.

Although the decline is dramatic, the figures align with the perception that Amsterdam is becoming an increasingly unsafe place for homosexual individuals to walk hand in hand on the streets. Incidents of anti-LGBT+ violence frequently make the news. There have been violent incidents in the LGBT+ nightlife area, Reguliersdwarsstraat, a drag queen was attacked on public transport, Pride flags were set on fire, and a gay couple repeatedly faced violence from a group of youths.

Acceptance rates are also declining in other Dutch regions. In Utrecht, acceptance of homosexuality fell from 71 percent (in 2019) to 46 percent. In the province of Zeeland, acceptance of transgender individuals has significantly dropped. Two years ago, 46 percent of young people considered trans persons "normal"; now, that figure is only a quarter. Additionally, the percentage of youth in the province who view trans individuals as "wrong" has increased from 13 to 25 percent.
