In the 75-kilogram boxing category, Cindy Ngamba achieved a unique accomplishment. She has secured at least a bronze medal after defeating the French Davina Michel, thus earning a spot in the semifinals. In Olympic boxing, the losers of the two semifinals each receive a bronze medal. The medal, regardless of its final metal, is the first medal ever for the Olympic refugee team.

The lesbian Ngamba has refugee status in the United Kingdom because homosexuality is illegal in her home country of Cameroon. She came to the UK with her parents at the age of eleven, but only received refugee status in 2021 due to her sexual orientation. In 2019, she was nearly deported, which she describes as one of the scariest periods of her life.

Ngamba screamed with joy after reaching the semifinals. " This means the world to me. I hope I can change the colour of my medal in the next fight," she said. "I want to tell the refugees around the world, keep on working hard, keep on pushing yourself and you can accomplish anything."
