Idaho wants to exclude trans women from sports with ‘genital control’

A law has been passed in the state parliament of Idaho (US) to ensure that trans women can no longer participate in sports competitions. If there is any doubt about the biological sex that a person is born with, it could become possible to perform blood tests and even check one’s genitalia. According to the petitioner, Barbara Ehardt, the law is intended to "protect women".

The law caused a lot of protest from the LGBT + community. A demonstration was organized in front of the parliament building. This was to no avail however, the law was passed with 52 against 17 votes. Transgender triathlete Chris Mosier called the law "the worst in the country attacking (transgender) student-athletes," AP writes.

Ehardt defended her legislation by claiming that leaders should create fair opportunities for women. "It is daunting to see that a couple of athletes, under the motto of equality, do not support girls and women pursuing their dream of standing on stage, while a biologically born man takes their place."

Mosier sees things vastly different however: “I want young people to know that it’s okay to be your authentic self and to play the sports that you love,

The law has yet to be passed by the Idaho Senate. The majority of the Idaho Senate, like the House of Representatives, consists of Republicans.
