Shelby was in 9th grade in Huntsville, Alabama and would be getting bullied because of his sexual orientation. On April 19, the 15-year-old boy committed suicide. Nadia M. Richardson, a former high school student, wrote the following about his death: "I am still processing this loss." Richardson is also behind the wheel of a mental health awareness campaign.

"We have so much to understand and so much work to do. Racism, sexism, homophobia, classism; this all plays a role. Bullying is a by-product of a world that is poorly equipped to absorb what is considered different. This results in psychologically harmful anaesthesia and many isolated, self-hateful and depressed people are left behind. Do not avoid the necessary conversations about this. The costs are too high." Richardson said.

A GoFundMe page hoped to raise $ 10,000 to support Shelby's mother in this tough time and to cover funeral expenses. The final amount has significantly exceeded the target: 27,000 dollars have already been raised.
