Far-Right MEP Destroys LGBTI Exhibition in Polish Parliament

Far-right Member of the European Parliament Grzegorz Braun vandalised an LGBTI exhibition in the Polish Sejm on Wednesday, prompting strong reactions across the country’s political spectrum. Braun has since been banned from entering the parliamentary building.

The exhibition, organised by the group Tęczowe Opole, aimed to promote equality and LGBTI rights. Videos circulating on social media show Braun removing display boards from their stands, throwing them to the floor, and folding them. The display was later restored. Parliamentary security did not intervene during the incident, drawing criticism from many including Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski.

Marshal of the Sejm Szymon Hołownia announced via X that Braun is now banned from entering the building. “There is no place for hooligans in the Sejm,” he wrote. Hołownia condemned the destruction of the exhibition as unacceptable behaviour within a democratic institution and said calls to review parliamentary security are growing louder.

Braun is no stranger to controversy. In March, he vandalised a similar exhibition in Opole. In December 2023, he made international headlines after using a fire extinguisher to put out Hanukkah candles lit in the Sejm, an act that led to the removal of his domestic parliamentary immunity.

Although Braun briefly regained protection through his election to the European Parliament in June 2024, that immunity was lifted again in May. As a result, he now faces the possibility of criminal prosecution in Poland. This week’s incident has renewed calls for legal action against the controversial politician.
