European Parliament Calls for Full Recognition of Trans Women at UN Talks

The European Parliament on Wednesday adopted a resolution setting out the European Union’s priorities for the upcoming session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York. The resolution includes support for access to abortion and measures against online hate targeting women, but drew particular attention for its explicit call to fully recognize transgender women as women.

The Parliament states that the inclusion of transgender women is essential for effective gender-equality and anti-violence policies and calls for equal access to protection and support services. The resolution passed with 340 votes in favor, 141 against, and 68 abstentions. While non-binding, it sends a strong political signal.

Notably, the text was supported not only by left-wing groups but also by a majority of the center-right European People’s Party. Far-right parties voted against it and strongly criticized the decision.

The vote places the EU on a collision course with the United States, where the Trump administration has taken an opposing stance on transgender rights. Europe thus appears increasingly willing to defend transgender inclusion on the global stage.
