“It is with immense sadness that we let you know our beloved James Lee Williams – The Vivienne, has passed this weekend,” wrote publicist Simon Jones on Instagram. “Their family is heartbroken at the loss of their son, brother, and uncle. They are so proud of the wonderful things James achieved in their life and career.” Jones requested that the media respect the family's privacy during this difficult time.

The Vivienne gained fame by winning the inaugural season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK. In 2022, she also competed in season 7 of the spin-off RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars.

The Vivienne was renowned for her sense of humour and comedy, earning particular praise for her impersonation of Donald Trump during the “Snatch Game” challenge. Fellow drag queens have expressed shock and grief over her passing. The first-ever RuPaul’s Drag Race winner, Bebe Zahara Benet, said, “This is heartbreaking.” Jinkx Monsoon, a fellow Drag Race winner and champion of the same All Stars season The Vivienne participated in, commented, “I don’t entirely have words… She has made her mark in our hearts and on her stages. It’s too soon for a curtain call, but I know it’s a standing ovation. I love you, Viv.” Judge Michelle Visage also shared her sorrow: “I don’t know how to say how I feel. (…) You were always there, always laughing, always giving, always on point. Your laughter, your wit, your talent, your drag. I loved all of it, but I loved your friendship most of all. You were a beacon to so many.”

Beyond her drag career, The Vivienne also performed in musical theatre. She appeared in the West End production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and played the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz musical. Reflecting on these achievements, Visage said, “Seeing you make your West End debut was amazing for me – to witness your dream come true right in front of my eyes. I’m the lucky one to have known you and to have laughed together with you so many times.”

No further details about the cause of death have been disclosed, according to The Vivienne’s manager.
