US: ‘’Russian death list with names of LGBT+ activists in Eastern Ukraine’’

LGBT+ activists living in eastern Ukraine must fear for their lives. The US writes to the UN that there is a 'death list' with the names of activists, including LGBT+ people.

According to Foreign Policy magazine, human rights activists and dissidents will be arrested or liquidated in the event of a Russian attack. The US ambassador in the UN also warns against this. In an urgent letter to the Washington Post, Ambassador Bathsheba Nell Crocker said he had information "indicating human rights violations are being planned in the wake of another invasion."

“These acts,” Crocker writes, “would likely target those opposing Russian actions, including Russian and Belarusian dissidents in exile in Ukraine, journalists, anti-corruption activists, and vulnerable populations such as religious and ethnic minorities and LGBT+ persons. In particular, we have credible information indicating that Russian troops are making lists of identified Ukrainians to be killed or sent to camps after military occupation.”

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan previously told NBC's Today Show that the US has information that suggests "there will be an even greater form of brutality because this will not simply be a conventional war between two armies."

Russia has recognized the two insurgent regions in eastern Ukraine, Luhansk People's Republic and Donetsk, as independent states. Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a "peace mission" to the region, something the US and Western countries are describing as an invasion. If the Russians actually set foot on Ukrainian soil, the US fears, LGBT+ individuals and other human rights activists will have to fear for their lives.

Russia sees LGBT+ rights as a Western ideology that goes against Russian traditional values. The country has a strict law designed to counter “propaganda” from the LGBT+ community.
