Trump starts limiting healthcare for trans people

US President Donald Trump is reported to be phasing out transgender health services later this week, just two weeks after his prohibition of trans-military force came into effect.

The White House is said to eliminate the protection for transgender people created in the Obama era. This requires doctors and insurers to refuse treatment based on gender and gender identity. Existing laws require that doctors and hospitals provide medical treatment to transgender people.

The White House Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) could announce new legislation that would revoke this protection in the coming days, The Hill reported on Tuesday (April 23).

The new rules are "likely to send an even stronger signal that the government supports discrimination in healthcare against transgender people," said Harper Jean Tobin, policy director at the National Center for Transgender Equality. She added, "It won't mean that transgender people can't get healthcare overnight, but it will be a slow process that allows more discrimination."
