The police in India beat up two groups of transgender people, resulting in multiple arrests. According to witnesses, two rival groups of transgender people had a disagreement outside the police station of Lalkurti in Meerut. When violence broke out between the two groups, it escalated because the authorities thought they could solve this by using violence and clubs.

According to Piyush Rai, a journalist from Uttar Pradesh, the incident broke out after two trans groups were confronted this afternoon. Rai explained that the two groups have designated areas where they walk around and put on an act to raise money with people during festive occasions such as weddings and birthdays. Both groups have their own territory in the city of Merrut, a city north of India.

According to Rai, one of the groups entered the territory of the other group, which led to a collision between the two. Allegedly both parties had approached the local police. The video that Rai posted on Twitter shows that the police attacked the trans people with clubs. He later tweeted that the police have imprisoned nine of the transgender people. They have been charged with attempted murder and assault.
