This is Hooverphonic: Belgiums renewed hope for a Eurovision victory

Belgian broadcaster VRT finally got their long cherished wish: the band Hooverphonic will represent the country at Eurovision. The band is one of the major musical names in the country, with a large international fanbase. The band previously declined the offer to represent Belgium four times before. This year however, they said yes.

Their Eurovision song has yet to be recorded, so the band will have to find time for this amid their busy schedule. They will continue their European tour this week and are scheduled to play in Greece, Hungary, Poland and Czechia among other countries.  All Eurovision songs have to be finished and submitted on the 9th of March.

Musically, Hooverphonic is known for making ambient pop, mixed with a lot of different styles. From rock to triphop influences, sometimes accompanied by strings. Their biggest international hit is the song “Mad About You”.

The frontwoman of the band has changed a couple of times over the years. At Eurovision, Luka Cruysberghs will deliver the vocals. She is the band’s lead singer since 2018, after she was discovered during the Flemish version of The Voice. Most of the recent Belgian Eurovision got their first big break in the talent competition show. However, their results varied over the years. In 2015, 2016 and 2017, Belgium made the top 10. In the last two years, Belgium did not even make the grand final.

Our ‘Eurovision Calling’ host Jens Geerts is convinced Hooverphonic will deliver a strong tune, but emphasizes the importance of the new lead singer’s role. “And even though winning may not be the highest priority for Hooverphonic, according to Alex (bandmember), I still assume that, deep down, people want to reach the finals and even finish in the top 10.”

The band said they will deliver a typical Hooverphonic sound. Belgium is the first country to announce their entry for next year’s song contest. Albania is expected to be the next country to choose their song, with their selection show being held in December. The Eurovision Song Contest 2020 will be held in the Dutch city of Rotterdam in May, after the country’s win last year with the song Arcade.
