Last year, Ibraima Touray-Drammeh, 17, was standing near the gay nightclub The Boston in Northampton, when he started calling out homophobic things to the man in question. A fight ensued and the teenager pulled a machete out of his pants with which he cut a 20 cm wound into the man's stomach. The man tried to call the emergency number, but the teenager kicked his phone out of his hand. He then ran away, leaving the man who was struggling with his horrific injury.

During the court hearing at Northampton Crown Court, the jury heard how the teenager had bought the machete, just two days before the attack. Judge Adrienne Lucking said: "This is what happens when you carry guns in public and injure other people. You walked through the city centre with a barely disguised machete. You slashed him in the chest, in broad daylight, in public."

According to the Northampton Chronicle, the victim was rescued by the police and was held in a medically induced coma on the way to the hospital, where he had to undergo extensive surgery. At the trial, Judge Adrienne added: "This violation is so serious that only an immediate prison sentence is appropriate ... and I have to impose an extended sentence to protect the rest of the world against you."

Touray-Drammeh was sentenced to 10 years 'imprisonment and eight months' imprisonment and must have been in prison for at least seven years before he is eligible for conditional release.
