Rabbi from Jerusalem demands a ban on 'ugly' rainbow flags

One of the most prominent Rabbis, Aryeh Stern, has called for rainbow flags not to be seen during the Jerusalem Pride Parade or along the parade route in a letter to the mayor of the city. Stern wrote that the rainbow flags are ugly and the Pride Parade is a shame.

"I know that from the point of view of the law, the mayor is unable to prevent the parade, and so I ask you at least not to let the flags be seen, because they make the city ugly," He then continued "I trust that you are going to be wise and prevent us this shame, especially now in these holy days between the days of Jerusalem and Shavuot.’’

The letter, which was leaked and got into the hands of the press, also asked Lion to save them this shame. In a statement, the Jerusalem congregation said the flags would be set up as they have been up in previous years. The Pride Parade of Jerusalem will take place on June 6th.

Last Monday, organizers of Jerusalem Pride spoke out against a police plan that would require Pride protesters to show their ID. The police suggested setting up security checkpoints around the parade route where demonstrators would have to show their identity papers. However, the organizers of the parade stated the following in a social media post: "We are currently talking to the police to clarify the matter, but let one thing be clear: no one will be stopped to enter without ID cards - we will not allow this to happen." Supporters expressed their concerns that Palestinian citizens and transgender people would not attend the Parade because their presence and identity would then be recorded.
