LGBT advocates commemorated with public statue
New York City’s First Lady, Chirlane McCray, says: “It is vital to include stories of activists like Johnson and Rivera in order to give the monument a name and face.’’ The statue will most likely be placed down the street of the Stonewall inn, where the riots took place in 1969.
In New York there are three other LGBT+ monuments among which the Gay Liberation monument in Manhattan. However this monument will be one of the first statues dedicated to LGBT activists. The aim is for the monument to be completed in 2021.
