Johnson and Rivera are both known for their significant contribution to the modern pride movement as a result of the Stonewall riots in 1969, in which they both participated. Many people say Johnson was the first to resist police intimidation at the Stonewall inn, Rivera is rumored to have thrown the first bottle at a police officer, thus conceiving the stonewall riots.

New York City’s First Lady, Chirlane McCray, says: “It is vital to include stories of activists like Johnson and Rivera in order to give the monument a name and face.’’ The statue will most likely be placed down the street of the Stonewall inn, where the riots took place in 1969.

In New York there are three other LGBT+ monuments among which the Gay Liberation monument in Manhattan. However this monument will be one of the first statues dedicated to LGBT activists. The aim is for the monument to be completed in 2021.
