Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Javad Zarif defended the death penalty for gays during a press conference in Tehran. Zarif even went as far to defend the Draco’s Law Code. This law originated in ancient Greece, where the aristocrats saw fit to punish crimes with death.

When asked about why homosexuals are being killed in his country he responded with; “Our society has values for the behavior of all people. That means that the law is respected and that the law is obeyed.”

The German Minister of Foreign Affairs was also present at the conference and responded to Javad’s extreme claims; “LGBT+ rights are human rights. This has always been the case. No religion or cultural tradition justifies prosecution, especially of homosexuals.” As of now, homosexuality is punishable by death in Iran and seven other countries around the world.
