Irish gay man physically attacked after being tricked on Grindr

A man in his 50s has been severely attacked in Dublin, after he met with a man through gay dating app Grindr. His ‘date’ however wasn’t a man, but a group of violent teenagers. They attacked him and his car with hammers. The victim had to be treated in the hospital.

The man wrote about the attack in a post on his Facebook page, which has been shared by thousands. In the pictures he uploaded, you can see his face and hands covered in blood. According to the victim, the teenagers tried to kill him with the weapons they were carrying. “They didn't manage, but I'm in the emergency room in hospital with facial injuries and my car was destroyed. I'm O.K., but fucking angry.”

The Gardaí are investigating the attack. They are checking CCTV footage, but are also asking witnesses to contact them. So far, it is still being investigated if the attack was a hate crime. RTÉ reports that the number of hate crimes has increased in the last few years. Gardaí say they believe a definition of the term “hate crime” will encourage more people to come forward.
