A Twitter user attempting to peek into the Olympic Village using Grindr's explore function was disappointed. This function allows users to select a location on the map and see who is online there. However, it appears that this feature has been disabled in the athletes' residence area.
During the 2022 Winter Olympics, Grindr accommodated Olympic athletes looking for a different kind of sport after their performances by adding a special "Olympic function" at the Olympic Village location. Athletes from countries where homosexuality is illegal could then look for a fun date without worrying that someone from their home country was monitoring the Olympic Village via the app.
The organising committee of the Games told MailOnline that dating apps are accessible within the Olympic Village, "but for some, geolocation is deactivated by the app publisher."
Grindr's popularity among Olympic athletes became evident during the 2012 Games. On the day the athletes arrived in London, the app crashed. In 2016, the American website Daily Beast published an article where a journalist went on Grindr dates in the Olympic Village. However, some Grindr-using athletes got into trouble as their identities could be traced back through the article. The website later apologised for this.
