The small southeast country of the Asian kingdom - following a strict Sharia law - caused international commotion last month when it introduced the death penalty law for homosexual men by stoning

After the news of the law, many celebrities including George Clooney, Ellen Degeneres and Sir Elton John called for the boycott of Brunei. But yesterday (May 6), after global pressure, the Sultan of Brunei revealed that the country will no longer use the death penalty for gay sex.

Although this is great news for LGBTQ citizens in Brunei, Clooney has said in a statement not to fall back and keep on putting pressure. Clooney wrote in a statement to Deadline: "This is a huge step forward after a huge leap back. It promises that the citizens of Brunei will not be executed because they are gay. It also sends a very crucial message to countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia that there is a price if you want to implement these laws. The price is not that people boycott their hotels. The price is that companies and large banks will not do business with these countries. The financial adjustment has had a huge impact. having said that, the law to stone their citizens is still in force, meaning that as soon as the pressure dies, they can just start the execution process, so with regard to the boycott, everyone must do what he thinks is correct , for my family and me we just can't run away until this draconian law is no longer in the books.
