No diversity? No BAFTA award! Big step for LGBT representation on TV

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has introduced a new rule to stimulate inclusivity. All the nominations have to meet the BFI diversity standards. Those standards include the LGBT community.

The new standards are one of the new rules for the 2021 awards. “Our aim is to bring the industry together to improve diversity and inclusion,” said Amanda Berry, CEO at BAFTA. Next to the new standards, the committees and jury chairs are also being offered independent unconscious bias training.‘

The LGBT community is part of the new diversity standards. They also focus on disability, race and age. The organisation also aims for a better representation of people from outside London and the South East.

The BAFTA Film Awards already implemented diversity rules on several categories. Award shows are often being criticized by their lack of diversity. In recent years the American Grammys, Oscars and Emmys have been put under a microscope in regards to inclusivity.
