Police in Salisbury, Maryland, are investigating the assault of an 18-year-old man by a group of local fraternity members. Posing as a 16-year-old boy (the legal age of consent in the state) on Grindr, the fraternity members lured the victim to an apartment. On arrival, he was confronted by a group of 15 students who forced him into a chair, shouted homophobic slurs, then threw him to the floor, where they kicked, hit, and spat on him.
According to local police, the attack lasted only a few minutes. The attackers threatened the victim to prevent him from contacting authorities. However, the police were able to identify the perpetrators thanks to a video made by the attackers themselves. A university staff member obtained the video and shared it with the police.
“Acts of violence toward LGBTQ+ communities are not only destructive but at odds with the principles of community, respect, and belonging that bind us together as a university,” Salisbury University President Carolyn Ringer Lepre wrote in a statement.
“The thought of SU students perpetrating any crime is upsetting, but the thought of SU students perpetrating crimes of such a disturbing nature is truly horrifying,” Lepre added, noting that the students will face further disciplinary action from the university.
