Ellen DeGeneres: Stand up against Brunei!

Ellen DeGeneres urges people to "stand up" against the new Brunei laws that enter into force today (April 3) that punishes homosexual sex and adultery with death by stoning. The comedian and the talk show host wrote on Twitter: ’’Please boycott these hotels owned by the Sultan of Brunei’’ DeGeneres continued. “Raise your voices now. Spread the word. Rise up.”

A big number of other prominent figures have already stepped forward to show that they are strongly against the new anti-gay legislation. Robert Palladino, vice spokesperson for Mike Pompeo, said that the new legislation is in violation of their international human rights obligations. George Clooney and Elton John also called on everyone to boycott hotels owned by Brunei.

Meanwhile, Canada's foreign policy also said they were "very concerned" about the decision. They said that Canada supports human rights for everyone and always opposes the death penalty.


Today, this anti-gay Sharia law entered into force, despite fierce criticism and pressure at international level. With this, sexual acts between people of the same sex can now lead to the death penalty via stoning.
