Jaime Quintana, the new president of the Senate, has promised to pass an equal marriage bill in 2019: ‘’Chile is in full cultural change, and demands wider freedoms and rights’’ - Jaime Quintana.

In 2015, Chile started to legally recognize same-sex unions. Former president, Michelle Bachelet, introduced an equal marriage bill in 2017. When Sebastián Piñera took office in March last year however, his government said it would not prioritize the bill.

The new president of the Senate sees differently and has promised to pass the bill. The majority of Chileans are supportive of LGBT+ rights. A recent study showed that 65% of the adults in Chile are in favor of legalizing gay marriage.
