“Inside detention centres, LGBTQI+ often experience prejudices or conditions similar to those from which they have fled”, says Leila Zadeh, Executive Director at UKLGIG. According to her, these individuals face serious harassment and violence inside of those centres.

With 28 videos, in which the stories of different refugees are told, the organisation wants to spread the message: 28 days inside of a detention centre should be the limit. According to Zadeh, that is the only way to “ensure fair treatment for people escaping persecution just for being who they are”.

The UK is the only European country to not have a time limit on how long people can be kept in detention, which means LGBT+ (and other) refugees can be detained for a very long time.

For the campaign, UKLGIG has garnered support from a great number of famous (LGBT+) Brits, such as The Great British Bake Off contestant Rav Bansal.

The Home Office already refused a proposal for such a 28 days limit back in June. According to the government, “an immigration detention time limit of 28 days would severely constrain the ability to maintain balanced and effective immigration control, potentially incentivise significant abuse of the system, and put the public at risk.”
