Sir Ian McKellen launches initiative to support 50+ LGBT people

06/06/2019 11:32

The legendary actor launched a special programme in collaboration with the British LGBT Foundation in order to support LGBT+ people over 50: ‘Pride in Ageing’

The initiative was first presented on June 5th during an event in Manchester. McKellen said: ‘’No one is born with prejudice, it’s something you learn.’’ He continued by speaking of the silence regarding sexuality while growing up: ‘’There was no mention of sexuality other than heterosexuality at school, on the radio, in church. Absolute silence. So is it any wonder that people who are older, when things are hazy, they may think back to a time when things were different?’’

Pride in Ageing will work to eliminate the inequality experienced by lesbians, homosexuals, bisexuals and transgender people of 50 years and older. The organisation also aims to ensure access to inclusive housing and care for LGBT+ people in Greater Manchester later in life. The social isolation LGBT+ people may experience at an older age in the UK is a focus point for the organisation to tackle as well.

Above all, Pride in Ageing will emphasize and celebrate the positive aspects that come with being LGBT+ and over the age of 50. The primary goal is to bring people closer together, share their stories and experiences, and eventually build an active and empowered community.
